Before the stadium shows and the chart-topping collaborations, the helmeted producer known as Marshmello introduced himself with Joytime, the 2016 debut that bottled his candy-coloured brand of feel-good electronic music.
Marshmello arrived as an anonymous figure in a white, cartoon-faced helmet, letting the music do all the talking. He self-released Joytime through his own Joytime Collective label, handling the production and mixing himself, and the album shot to the top of the iTunes electronic chart on its first day. It became the first chapter in a series that continued with Joytime II and Joytime III, and it set the template for everything that followed.
The sound is future bass at its most cheerful: pitched-up vocal chops, fat, wobbling synths and drops that feel more like a sugar rush than a punch. "Know Me" opens the record with an instant hook that announces his melodic instincts, "Summer" radiates exactly the sunshine its title promises, and "Keep It Mello," featuring rapper Omar LinX, closes things out with extra swagger. "Find Me" keeps the mood bright and buoyant.
Bright, bouncy and unashamedly upbeat, Joytime is the origin story of one of dance music's most recognisable characters. It's a fun, colourful spin for fans who want to hear exactly where the marshmallow-headed phenomenon began.
