Houston: Publishing Demos 2002 opens a window on Mark Lanegan in transition, a set of songs cut quickly in Texas that sat unreleased for thirteen years.

Lanegan travelled to Houston in 2002 to fulfil a publishing contract with his old friend, the producer and label head Randall Jamail, and the sessions ran for about a week. He wrote many of the songs in the studio parking lot while the band laid down overdubs. Recorded between Field Songs and the heavier Bubblegum, the material finally surfaced in 2015, and it plays less like a sketchbook than a finished record with rough, honest edges.

The band knows how to leave space, with guitarist Mike Johnson, Ian Moore on guitar and sitar, keyboardist Bukka Allen and harmonica player Mickey Raphael all in the room. "When It's In You (Methamphetamine Blues)" is an early take on a song he would revisit on Bubblegum, "Grey Goes Black" captures the numbness he felt after September 11, and "Way To Tomorrow" was written and recorded on his final night in Houston, after he heard of Layne Staley's death.

Through all of it, that voice sits right up front, all gravel and grief.

For Lanegan devotees it fills a crucial gap, and for newcomers it is a striking portrait of a singer at his most unguarded.
