Thirty years on, Antichrist Superstar still sounds like a provocation. This 30th anniversary edition spreads Marilyn Manson's 1996 breakthrough across two LPs in iridescent red with a gold swirl.

Released through Nothing and Interscope, the album was conceived as a rock opera, a story of corruption and transformation that became the first part of a loose trilogy completed by Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood. Trent Reznor co-produced alongside Manson, Sean Beavan and Dave Ogilvie, and the result was heavier, colder and more ambitious than anything the band had done before. Protest groups lined up against it, which only made the record louder in the culture.

Musically, it is industrial metal with a theatrical streak a mile wide. "Irresponsible Hate Anthem" opens with a snarl, "The Beautiful People" stomps on a riff built like a marching order, and "Tourniquet" trades brute force for something stranger and more seductive. By the time "Man That You Fear" closes the story, the mood has shifted from rage to a slow, funereal grandeur.

Reznor's fingerprints are everywhere, in the grinding textures and the sense that every noise was placed with intent.

For collectors, this pressing marks three decades of a record that defined the shock-rock end of the 1990s and still draws new listeners into its bleak, brilliant world.
