I Am Both catches Margaret Glaspy at her most unguarded, a 2026 album cut live in the studio with nowhere to hide.
The California-raised, New York-based songwriter stepped away from social media before writing it, hoping to get back to the daily practice of making songs. She then took them to Reservoir Studios in New York City with producer Joe Henry, recording live over three days with drummer Jay Bellerose, keyboardist Patrick Warren and bassist Ross Gallagher. It arrives on ATO, her label home since 2015.
Recording live favours feel over fuss, and the band leaves plenty of room around Glaspy's voice and guitar. Lead single "Michigan" tells the story of a post-breakup escape to the Midwest, its narrator leaving the city behind to start over. "Martin Luther King Jr." arrived with its own video ahead of her tour, and the closing title track "I Am Both" gives the record its name and its final word.
The whole album carries the warmth of people playing in the same room and trusting whatever happens next, small imperfections and all.
For anyone who fell for Emotions and Math, it is a welcome reminder of how much power she packs into plain, direct songwriting.
