Before the big rooms and bigger choruses, Manchester Orchestra made You Brainstorm, I Brainstorm, But Brilliance Needs a Good Editor, now back on colored vinyl as an anniversary reissue.
Released in 2005 through Favorite Gentlemen, the Atlanta band's own imprint, the EP arrived after the group shelved an earlier album, Nobody Sings Anymore, feeling the lineup that made it was no longer the band they had become. Some songs written for that lost record landed here instead, produced by Andy Hull himself and sold through the band's merch site. Hull had picked the band's name after a summer of listening to nothing but The Smiths, and that kind of devotion runs all through these five tracks.
"The Procession" opens the set with real intent, while "Alice and Interiors" proved strong enough to be reworked for the debut album a year later. "Slow to Learn" keeps things short and bruised, and the closing "Play It Again, Sam! You Don't Have Any Feathers" stretches toward six minutes of slow-burning release, the clearest early sign of how big this band wanted to sound.
For anyone who arrived with Mean Everything to Nothing or A Black Mile to the Surface, this is the origin story, raw and a little reckless, and pressed with real care.
