Making Good Time is the second covers collection from Iron and Wine and Ben Bridwell, five songs picked with a gleam in the eye and sung with a lot of heart.
Sam Beam and Bridwell, the voice of Band of Horses, first teamed up on the covers album Sing Into My Mouth a decade ago, and this 2025 EP picks up the thread like no time has passed. Their blended harmonies and unfussy arrangements turn a wildly mixed set of source material, from stadium rock to soft pop to modern hip hop, into one cohesive and affectionate mood.
Luther takes Kendrick Lamar and SZA's slow-burning duet and turns it into a tender folk-pop meditation, I Want to Know What Love Is gives Foreigner's power ballad some quiet dignity, More Than This lets Roxy Music's wistful melody float, and Ketchum, ID reaches into the boygenius songbook for a hushed, intimate closer.
Released on Black Cricket Recording Co. as a one-sided EP with an etched flip, it is a small, charming record, the sound of two friends turning favourite songs into something personal. Nothing here tries to outdo the originals, and that is the appeal: gentle, generous and ideal for a quiet afternoon with the record player.
