Mad Season's Above returns remastered and expanded with bonus tracks, bringing back the only album from Seattle's most haunted supergroup, a one-off that still casts a long shadow.

Formed in 1994 by Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley, Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin and bassist John Baker Saunders, the band came together around sobriety and late-night jams. Recorded at Bad Animals Studio in Seattle and released in 1995, Above went gold in the US, and the loss of Staley and Saunders in the years that followed has only made it feel more precious.

This is grunge slowed to a bluesy, smoky crawl. "River of Deceit" is the standout, a gentle, rolling ballad with Staley's voice wrapped in regret and hard-won wisdom. "Wake Up" opens the album on a dark, simmering hush, while "Long Gone Day" brings in Mark Lanegan's gravel and Skerik's mournful saxophone for something close to late-night jazz. "I Don't Know Anything" restores the weight with a churning, heavy-lidded snarl.

Tender and achingly human, it remains one of the most affecting records to come out of the Seattle scene. Staley even drew the cover illustration himself, a personal touch that makes holding this one feel all the more special.
