Shades of Purple is the rare turn-of-the-millennium teen pop record made by two people who actually wrote and played everything on it, Norwegian duo M2M's debut spread across two colored platters here.

Marit Larsen and Marion Raven had been friends since they were five, formed a duo at eight, and released a children's album under their own names while still barely into their teens, complete with a Spellemannprisen nomination. By the time they signed to Atlantic in 1998 and became M2M, they'd already spent a decade as genuine musicians rather than manufactured talent, and that distinction followed them everywhere, critics repeatedly noting they wrote their own songs and played their own instruments at a moment when almost none of their teen-pop peers could claim either.

Don't Say You Love Me became the song that made them, closing out Pokémon: The First Movie and riding that cultural moment to gold certifications on two continents. Mirror Mirror followed as the album's second single and went gold in the US on its own merits, and Everything You Do carried real dancefloor crossover appeal, climbing the Hot Dance Singles chart. The album itself sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide and topped Billboard's Heatseekers chart, proof the songwriting held up well beyond the Pokémon tie-in.
