Second Helping is the record where Lynyrd Skynyrd turned Southern rock from a regional rumble into a national roar, now on limited edition yellow vinyl.
Released in 1974 and produced by Al Kooper, the band's second album built on the promise of their debut with three-guitar interplay, rolling piano and Ronnie Van Zant's plainspoken storytelling. Hits and deep cuts sit comfortably side by side, and the record helped define the sound of the Jacksonville band for generations of rock fans who came after.
Sweet Home Alabama is the anthem everyone knows, that bright opening riff and its famous reply to Neil Young still sounding gloriously defiant. Don't Ask Me No Questions brings swagger and a wry shrug, The Ballad of Curtis Loew is a tender tale of an old bluesman, and Call Me the Breeze rolls down the highway on an easy shuffle.
Raw, soulful and unmistakably Southern, it holds up as one of the great American rock albums of the decade, full of storytelling, swagger and more guitar than you can shake a stick at.
