The Soapbox Spectacle is Lucky Boys Confusion right before they got big, eight tracks of scrappy pop punk finally pressed to vinyl for the first time, limited to 1,000 copies on 10-inch.

The Chicago band spent the late 1990s building a following the old way, touring relentlessly and self-releasing music until a label noticed, and this 2000 EP is the document of exactly that moment, right on the hinge between DIY hustle and the bigger deal that would follow with Throwing the Game. It's rougher and quicker than what came after, songs that don't overstay, hooks that land because the band hadn't yet learned to second-guess them.

3 to 10 opens the record at a sprint, all nervous energy and shout-along backing vocals. Not About Debra carries the EP's sharpest melody wrapped around lyrics with real teeth, Fred Astaire earns its title with a loose, dancing rhythm section, and Dumb Pop Song closes things with a title that's either self-deprecating or completely accurate, possibly both at once.

Twenty-five years on and out of print the whole time, this is the missing document of a band finding their footing right before everyone else caught up.
