Lucinda Williams turns Tom Petty's songbook into something lived-in and gravel-voiced on Runnin' Down a Dream: A Tribute to Tom Petty, presented here as a double LP.
The set opened Lu's Jukebox, a series of themed, mostly full-band performances captured at Ray Kennedy's Room & Board Studio in Nashville in 2020, when venues sat dark and ticketed streams kept music moving. Part of the proceeds went to struggling independent venues, and the Petty episode was timed to celebrate what would have been his 70th birthday. The album followed in 2021.
Williams has never been interested in karaoke, and these versions prove it. "Rebels" kicks things off with a swaggering stomp, her drawl giving Petty's defiance a weathered, hard-won edge. "Wildflowers" is handled with real tenderness and unhurried phrasing, while "Gainesville" and "Southern Accents" lean into the Southern roots and small-town pride that ran through so much of his writing. The band plays loose but locked in, letting the grooves breathe the way a room full of musicians naturally does.
What comes through most is affection: one great American songwriter tipping her hat to another without losing a shred of her own identity. Petty fans and Lucinda devotees will find plenty to savour across these four sides.
