Christmas gets a roadhouse makeover on Lu's Jukebox Vol. 5: Have Yourself a Rockin' Little Christmas with Lucinda, as Lucinda Williams swaps tinsel for twang and a healthy dose of rhythm and blues.
Part of her Lu's Jukebox series of themed, full-band sets recorded at Ray Kennedy's Room & Board Studio in Nashville, this festive volume arrived in 2021. Rather than reaching for the most familiar carols, Williams digs through rock and roll, blues and country for holiday songs with a bit of grit under their fingernails, the kind you'd hear on a smoky bar jukebox rather than in a shopping mall.
Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run" kicks up plenty of dust, while "Blue Christmas" gets a bluesy, heavy-hearted treatment that suits her voice perfectly. Merle Haggard's "If We Make It Through December" becomes the album's emotional core, a working-class lament sung with weary tenderness, and Charles Brown's "Please Come Home for Christmas" zeroes in on the loneliness that sits beneath so many seasonal songs. The band keeps everything loose and swinging throughout.
It's a Christmas record for people who usually skip Christmas records, warm and rough around the edges and perfect for late-night wrapping sessions with something strong in your glass. Add it to the holiday stack and let it play.
