Lucinda Williams goes back to the country songs that shaped her on Lu's Jukebox Vol. 4: Funny How Time Slips Away, a loving set of 1960s classics cut live in a Nashville studio.
The Lu's Jukebox series began as a run of six studio concerts streamed to fans in 2020, when touring had stopped and Williams turned to the records she grew up on. This fourth volume is devoted to 60's country, recorded at Room & Board Studio with co-producers Ray Kennedy and Tom Overby, and a tight band featuring Stuart Mathis on guitar and Joshua Grange on pedal steel and banjo.
Her weathered voice is made for these songs. Willie Nelson's Night Life smolders like last call at a roadside bar, and the title track, another Nelson song, aches with the kind of regret Williams has always sung better than almost anyone. Loretta Lynn's Fist City gets a sly, swaggering kick, while Gentle On My Mind rolls along on a loose, easy groove with pedal steel weaving around the melody.
Williams sings them like she is catching up with old friends, and the band plays with the relaxed confidence of musicians who know exactly when to step back. It makes a warm companion to her own albums and a fine introduction to the songs that sit underneath them.
