Released in 2020, her fourteenth studio album reunited her with producer Ray Kennedy, who shared the controls with Williams and her husband and co-writer Tom Overby. Cut at Room and Board Studio in Nashville with a lean, ferocious band, it trades the sprawl of some recent records for blues-soaked heartland rock with real teeth. The songs take aim at corruption, cruelty and despair, but they also reach toward compassion and survival, and the album earned Grammy nominations for Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Song.
"You Can't Rule Me", adapted from Memphis Minnie, opens with a snarling statement of independence. "Man Without a Soul" is a slow, simmering takedown of a heartless leader, delivered with icy precision, while "Bad News Blues" grinds through a world drowning in headlines. Then "Good Souls" closes the record on a prayer, gentle and hard-won, asking for the strength of kind people.
