Picture a high school auditorium in Illinois in 1957, with Louis Armstrong and his All Stars on stage: One Night in Highland Park: Live! captures exactly that.

Armstrong and the All Stars played a fundraiser at Highland Park High School, with the school's own student stage crew running the show. Stage manager Joel Goldstein recorded the concert and held onto the tape for close to seven decades, and the result is a vivid snapshot of Pops as a touring entertainer at the peak of his fame, far from the big concert halls and festival stages he usually played.

The set opens, as so many of his shows did, with When It's Sleepy Time Down South, his longtime theme. From there it runs through crowd-pleasers like Blueberry Hill and Mack the Knife and digs into the slow, swaying Tin Roof Blues, with plenty of New Orleans fireworks still to come before the evening reaches its rousing close. That trumpet still cuts through everything.

It is a joyous, unvarnished document, the sound of a jazz giant playing for students and parents in a school hall and giving them every ounce of his talent. Few archival finds feel quite this warm or this human, and it deserves a place beside his celebrated live albums.
