Lou Donaldson's Sunny Side Up is relaxed, soulful hard bop recorded in 1960, back on 180 gram vinyl as part of Blue Note's Classic Vinyl series.
Cut across two separate sessions with Alfred Lion producing and Rudy Van Gelder engineering, the album catches the alto saxophonist leaning away from the straight-ahead bebop of his earlier Blue Note dates and toward something bluesier and more soulful. Trumpeter Bill Hardman, pianist Horace Parlan and drummer Al Harewood anchor the group, with Sam Jones and Laymon Jackson sharing bass duties across the two dates.
Parlan's "Blues for J.P." opens the record, and Hardman contributes "Politely," a reminder of how much this band enjoyed writing for one another. Donaldson brings two originals of his own, "The Truth" and "Goose Grease," while standards like "The Man I Love" and "It's You or No One" show off his warm, singing tone and easy sense of swing. Even the uptempo numbers feel unhurried, the sound of seasoned players enjoying each other's company rather than trying to outgun one another.
With Reid Miles' design and Francis Wolff's photography, this is classic Blue Note from the sleeve to the grooves. Spin it on a lazy weekend morning and the title will make perfect sense.
