Lord Huron's Lonesome Dreams reads like a stack of dog-eared adventure paperbacks set to music, a 2012 debut full of open roads and distant horizons.

Ben Schneider wrote and produced every song himself, shaping the band's first full-length after a handful of EPs. He described the album as a series of old adventure tales, and the music videos leaned into a 1970s western, pulp-fiction look that matched the songs perfectly.

Ends of the Earth opens on a jangling, sun-bleached rhythm and a promise to go wherever the trail leads. Time to Run gallops along on hand percussion and shimmering guitars, She Lit a Fire smoulders with romantic longing, and The Man Who Lives Forever turns thoughts of mortality into a surprisingly joyful stomp that begs for a campfire singalong.

Reverb-drenched vocals and stacked harmonies give everything a dreamy, faraway quality, as if the songs were drifting in from another century, picked up on a crackling radio somewhere out west. Every track feels like a new chapter in the same dusty saga.

Years before The Night We Met found its second life, this was the record that introduced Lord Huron's cinematic folk-rock, and it still makes ideal company for a long drive with nowhere in particular to be.
