Living Colour's Time's Up arrives on limited 180-gram green vinyl as a Holland import, bringing back the 1990 album where the New York quartet poured every genre they loved into one gloriously restless record.
Following the breakout of Vivid, Vernon Reid, Corey Glover, Muzz Skillings and Will Calhoun refused to play it safe. With producer Ed Stasium at the controls, they fused thrash, funk, jazz, hip-hop and soul into something bold and wildly inventive. The album won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance and was Skillings' last full-length with the band.
The title track opens with a blistering, breakneck blast about environmental collapse, while Type, an unusually long lead single, shows off Reid's knotty, inventive guitar work at full stretch. Love Rears Its Ugly Head swaps aggression for a slinky, soulful groove, and Elvis Is Dead takes a pointed swipe at rock mythology with help from none other than Little Richard.
The guest list is remarkable throughout, with Queen Latifah, Doug E. Fresh, Maceo Parker and James Earl Jones all stopping by to add their own flavor.
It is smart, funky and furious music that still sounds urgent, and on green vinyl it looks every bit as vivid as it sounds.
