Little Richard: I Am Everything doesn't just soundtrack a documentary, it stakes a claim: rock and roll's real originator was a Black, queer preacher's son from Macon, Georgia.

For decades the official story handed the crown to whoever repackaged Richard Penniman's sound with a straighter haircut and a cleaner reputation. This documentary, and the soundtrack built around it, corrects the record. Little Richard did not just influence rock and roll, he detonated it into existence, howling and pounding a piano into submission years before anyone else dared to sound that unhinged in public. That he did it as an openly queer Black man in the Jim Crow South makes the erasure that followed even harder to excuse, and this collection insists on putting his name back at the top of the marquee.

The soundtrack leans hard on the originals rather than sanitized covers. Tutti Frutti still sounds like a controlled explosion, Long Tall Sally barely holds its own tempo, and Rip It Up remains the sound of a piano being argued with rather than played. Valerie June and Cory Henry each contribute covers that honor the wildness without imitating it, and Tamar-Kali Brown's original score piece gives the film's quieter, more mournful moments somewhere to sit.

This is the sound of a record finally getting the credit its architect deserved.
