Little Feat's Time Loves a Hero spins on blue vinyl, the 1977 album where the Los Angeles band leaned hardest into funk and jazz-flavored grooves.

By their sixth studio album, the balance of power inside Little Feat was shifting. Lowell George, the slide guitar wizard who founded the group, still sang several songs, but guitarist Paul Barrere and keyboardist Bill Payne were steering the band toward slicker, more intricate arrangements. Ted Templeman produced, and guests including Michael McDonald and Patrick Simmons of the Doobie Brothers stopped by to lend a hand, adding to the record's polished West Coast sheen.

Hi Roller opens with a strut and a grin, George's voice front and center. The title track rides a mid-tempo funk groove that feels built for long summer drives, while Day at the Dog Races, a six-minute instrumental, lets the band stretch out in full fusion mode, with Richie Hayward's drums and Sam Clayton's congas locking together under Payne's keyboards. Rocket in My Pocket proves George still had plenty of mischief left in him, all greasy slide and sly humor.

Time Loves a Hero is the sound of a great band at a crossroads, loose and adventurous, and the blue pressing makes a handsome home for it on any classic rock shelf.
