Few singers could claim a song as completely as Linda Ronstadt, and Simple Dreams is the 1977 album where that gift reached full flower.

Produced by longtime collaborator Peter Asher, it became the best-selling studio album of her career, and it is easy to hear why. Backed by Laurel Canyon session aces including Waddy Wachtel, Dan Dugmore and Kenny Edwards, she moves from rock and roll to country heartbreak to old folk ballads without ever sounding like she is changing costumes. The playing is crisp and economical, leaving her voice front and centre at every turn.

Her take on Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou" is the emotional centrepiece, a slow, aching reading that turns homesickness into something grand. Warren Zevon's "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" gets a wry, rocking strut, Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy" bounces with real swagger, and "Tumbling Dice" proves she could take on the Rolling Stones without blinking. The quieter moments show just how much control she had at lower volumes, where every breath and sustained note carries weight.
