Seven years after her last album, Lily Allen returned in 2025 with West End Girl, a startlingly candid break-up record pressed here on clear vinyl.
Her fifth studio album, and her first for BMG, was written and recorded in a burst of creativity over roughly ten days in Los Angeles, with a few more sessions early the following year. Allen co-produced alongside Blue May, Kito and Seb Chew, and the songs unfold in chronological order like chapters of a novel, tracing the unravelling of a marriage from cosy domesticity to suspicion, fury and hard-won clarity. It plays like autofiction, and that blurred line between diary and invention gives every song real tension.
The title track opens with dreamy, musical-theatre flourishes before Ruminating kicks in on a looping, anxious beat that mimics an overthinking mind. Tennis sets a quiet domestic scene over mellow soul, and Madeline borrows the storytelling shape of a classic country confrontation song, complete with cinematic sound effects. Elsewhere, dancehall, garage and disco touches keep the mood shifting as fast as Allen's emotions.
Sharp, funny and painfully honest, it's the record that reminded everyone how much her voice and her pen had been missed. This is pop with the gloves off and nothing left unsaid.
