Cheeky, sun-dappled and armed with a sharper tongue than almost anything else in the 2006 charts, Lily Allen's Alright, Still returns on clear vinyl.
Allen built her early following online, and her debut arrived sounding like a dispatch from a real London life: nights out that go sideways, boyfriends who disappoint, a lazy little brother. Its breezy ska and reggae lilt set it apart from the glossier pop around it, and her deadpan delivery made every barb land twice as hard. Greg Kurstin was among the producers, beginning a partnership that would shape her next record too.
"Smile" rides a sweet, swaying groove while she cheerfully twists the knife into an ex, and "LDN" turns a stroll through the capital into a sly look at what hides beneath its sunny surface. "Littlest Things" slows the pace for a wistful glance back at a love gone by, and "Alfie" closes the record on a playful, music-hall bounce aimed squarely at her sibling.
Two decades on, the wit still stings, the tunes still float, and the record sounds as fresh as a summer afternoon in the park. Pressed on clear vinyl, Alright, Still remains the sound of a pop star who said exactly what she thought, and made it impossibly catchy.
