Lianne La Havas arrived fully formed on Is Your Love Big Enough?, her 2012 debut of warm guitar, supple vocals and quiet confidence. This edition is a UK import.
The London singer-songwriter had sung backing vocals for Paloma Faith and supported Bon Iver on tour before the album came out, and she spent around two years honing her songwriting after signing to Warner Bros. She made the record with producer Matt Hales, who co-wrote much of it, and the result introduced a rich, expressive voice equally at home in folk, soul and jazz.
Lost & Found is the slow-burner, a hushed, heartbroken confession that lets every crack in her voice show. The title track bounces with bright, urgent rhythm, Forget snaps with defiant attitude, and No Room for Doubt pairs her with American songwriter Willy Mason for a gentle, intimate duet.
Her guitar playing is as much a part of the story as her singing, nimble and jazz-tinged, giving even the sparest songs a lovely sense of movement.
More than a decade on, the album still sounds intimate and assured, the work of an artist who already knew exactly what she wanted to say. It suits late evenings, good headphones and close listening.
