Less Than Jake's Borders & Boundaries turns 25 with this expanded double LP on yellow vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, celebrating the Gainesville crew's first album for Fat Wreck Chords.
Released in 2000 after the band left Capitol, it was written before they set foot in the studio, unlike the two albums before it, and the extra preparation shows. Working with producer Steve Kravac, they dialled back the ska a touch and leaned into punchy, hook-loaded punk, without losing the horn section that makes them instantly recognisable. It captured a band at a crossroads, playing harder and sounding hungrier than ever.
"Gainesville Rock City" is the fan favourite, a sing-along love letter to the Florida town that raised them, while "Look What Happened" turns nostalgia and regret into one of their most affecting choruses. Opener "Magnetic North" comes out swinging, and "Is This Thing On?" shows how much melody they could pack into three minutes.
Vinnie Fiorello's lyrics, full of small-town restlessness and growing-up pains, still hit home for anyone who spent their twenties in a van or wishing they were in one.
This anniversary edition expands the original album across two records, making it a fitting way to celebrate a ska-punk cornerstone with the horns turned up loud.
