Happiness Anytime finds Leon Bridges loosening his collar and heading for the dance floor, pressed here on white sand coloured vinyl in a gatefold jacket.

His fifth studio album pairs the Fort Worth soul singer with producers J Lloyd and Lydia Kitto of the British group Jungle. The three met on the festival circuit, then booked four days in a Los Angeles studio with one simple rule: finish a whole song each day. By the final afternoon they had half the album, and that quick-fire spirit carries through to the finished record.

Rhythm is in the driver's seat this time, with nods to Afrobeat, Brazilian music and disco wrapped around that honeyed, unhurried voice. Early previews "Light the Way" and "Your Love Is Electric" set the tone, with grooves built for moving rather than sitting still.

"Take My Hand" is a highlight, cut in a single take with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Eric Harland, and it has the easy, lived-in feel of musicians simply locking in together. Bridges has framed the record around the idea that happiness is something you experience in the moment rather than chase.

It is a joyful left turn from one of modern soul's most graceful voices, and the white sand pressing makes a handsome home for it.
