Lee "Scratch" Perry treated the mixing desk like an instrument, and Scratch & Company: Chapter 1 gathers ten of his 1970s productions into one wonderfully strange and absorbing LP.
First assembled in 1981 for the Clocktower label, the collection draws on sessions from roughly 1970 to 1976, the years when Perry and his Upsetters were reshaping reggae and his studio experiments were laying the foundations of dub. It mixes vocal cuts and instrumentals from a rotating cast, with Val Bennett, Devon Irons and Johnny Lover among those passing through, all under Perry's watchful, mischievous ear.
Opener "Scratch the Dub Organizer" sets the tone with echo-soaked rhythm and a playful sense of space. "Tighten Up," credited to Lee & The Bluebells, brings a loose, sunny bounce, Devon Irons' "When Jah Come" carries a righteous roots message, and "Curly Dub" closes the set with bass so deep it seems to bend the room.
The Upsetters' rhythms are the backbone throughout, with thick, rolling basslines and skanking guitar, while drums and voices drop in and out of the mix as Perry pulls songs apart and rebuilds them.
For dub devotees and anyone curious about where modern remix culture began, it's a rich, rewarding dive into a genius at play.
