Blackboard Jungle Dub is Lee "Scratch" Perry and The Upsetters stripping reggae to its bones and rebuilding it in echo.
First issued in 1973 in a tiny Jamaican pressing, the album is one of the founding documents of dub, the art of treating the mixing desk as an instrument. Perry shared engineering duties with King Tubby, pulling vocals out, dropping instruments in and out of the mix and drenching what remained in reverb and delay. This pressing carries the later 12-track sequence that went on to circulate far more widely than the scarce original.
The Upsetters' line-up reads like a roll call of Jamaican session greats, with Aston "Family Man" Barrett and Carlton Barrett among the players holding down the rhythms and Augustus Pablo adding melodica. "Blackboard Jungle Dub" appears in two versions, its bassline looming out of the murk, while "Kasha Macka Dub" and "Fever Grass Dub" lean into space and texture, with horns and organ stabs flickering in and out like a faulty radio signal. "Dreamland Dub" is pure late-night haze.
Half a century on, producers are still borrowing ideas from what Perry did here. Played loud on a decent system, it remains a heavy, hypnotic listen that rewards close attention to every echo and dropout.
