Lee Morgan's The Sixth Sense joins the Blue Note Tone Poet Series on 180-gram vinyl, due in 2026, bringing back a 1967 sextet session that finds the trumpeter edging hard bop toward something looser and more exploratory.

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in November 1967, it pairs Morgan with a superb front line of Jackie McLean on alto and Frank Mitchell on tenor, backed by Cedar Walton on piano, Victor Sproles on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Morgan had already scored a crossover hit with The Sidewinder, and here he sounds less interested in repeating it than in pushing the music somewhere new.

The title track opens with a sly, insistent theme and a typically bright Morgan solo. Psychedelic leans into the restless spirit of its year with nervy, searching energy, while Cedar Walton's Afreaka sets the band loose over an earthy, rolling groove. The album closes with Cal Massey's The Cry of My People, a deeply felt piece that lingers long after the needle lifts.

Four of the six tunes are Morgan originals, a reminder of how strong a composer he had become by this point.

For hard bop collectors, it stands as one of the most rewarding and underrated records of his Blue Note years.
