Motion is Lee Konitz at his most daring, a piano-less trio session from 1961, now reissued in the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series on 180-gram vinyl.

Konitz came up through the cool school, with a light, dry alto tone and an improviser's mind that never settled for the obvious. For this Creed Taylor-produced date, he left the piano at home and worked with just bassist Sonny Dallas and drummer Elvin Jones. Jones was already reshaping jazz drumming at the time, and the contrast between his churning, polyrhythmic power and Konitz's cool, endlessly inventive lines is the whole thrill of the record.

The material is all standards, but nobody is playing it safe. "I Remember You" opens the album with Konitz treating the melody as a launch point rather than a script, spinning long, unpredictable phrases over the rhythm. "All Of Me" and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" become high-wire conversations between saxophone and drums, and "I'll Remember April" brings the set to a close.

Without a piano to fill in the harmony, there is nowhere to hide, and Konitz clearly loves it.

Motion is regularly counted among his finest records, and for anyone drawn to trio jazz with plenty of freedom, it rewards close listening.
