Lamb of God's Ashes of the Wake marks its 20th anniversary with this deluxe, expanded double LP, adding bonus tracks to the Richmond band's ferocious major-label debut.
Released in 2004 through Epic, the album pushed the band from underground favorites to standard-bearers of a new generation of American metal. Producer Machine helped capture a sound that was enormous yet lean, and the record's pointed anger at war and the politics around it gave the riffs a sharp, furious edge.
"Laid to Rest" opens with one of the most recognizable riffs in modern metal, while "Now You've Got Something to Die For" turns a rallying chant into a pit-starting command. The title track "Ashes of the Wake" stretches out into a largely instrumental showcase, with guest solos from Testament's Alex Skolnick and former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland. Randy Blythe's rasp and Chris Adler's surgical drumming keep the whole thing at a rolling boil from first riff to last.
The bonus side adds remixes from HEALTH and Justin K Broadrick, a pair of live cuts, and "Another Nail for Your Coffin" featuring Kublai Khan TX and Malevolence. It gives longtime fans plenty to chew on beyond the original eleven songs, and newcomers the perfect excuse to start here.
