La Roux returns with Old Flames, her fourth album, a set of songs Elly Jackson composed, wrote, produced and arranged entirely on her own.

It has been a long road since the 2009 debut that put La Roux on every dancefloor, and Jackson has spent the years since taking more and more control of her own work. Old Flames looks back without sounding stuck there. The songs deal with the end of a long relationship, forbidden love, addiction and the work of reconciling sexuality and identity while living in public view. That is heavy material, and she handles it with a pop writer's lightness of touch.

The reference points are wonderfully specific: David Lynch, Donnie Darko, All Saints and Mariah Carey all hover somewhere in the background. "Cabin Fever," the first single, blends a 1990s-influenced pop sound with wide, expansive electronic production, turning self-imposed isolation and racing thoughts into something you can dance to. "Old Flames (Intro)" sets the scene, and songs like "Final Fantasy" and "Night Vision" round out a tight eleven-track set.

It feels like a record made by someone who has nothing left to prove and plenty left to say.

For fans who have followed La Roux from the start, this one rewards patience with honesty and hooks in equal measure.
