L7 never sounded more gleefully filthy than on Smell the Magic, the 1990 Sub Pop record that marked the Los Angeles quartet as grunge's loudest outsiders. This remastered edition gathers all nine songs on one LP.
Originally a six-song 12-inch, it grew to nine tracks when it was expanded on CD the following year, and this remaster brings the full version together on vinyl. Produced by Jack Endino, it landed just as Seattle's scene was catching fire, yet L7 sounded like nobody else, heavier than most punk bands and far funnier than most metal ones.
"Shove," the band's first single, is the mission statement, a stomping, sarcastic blast of pent-up frustration that still lands like a raised middle finger. "Fast and Frightening" earns its title with a sneering, breakneck riff, and the closing cover of Eddie and the Subtitles' "American Society" ends the record on a snarl. In between, the songs grind and lurch with sludgy, unapologetic swagger.
Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner's twin guitars, Jennifer Finch's bass and Demetra Plakas's drumming lock together with brutal economy, and the attitude is impossible to fake.
Two years before Bricks Are Heavy made them stars, this is where L7 forged their sound, and it still plays like a dare.
