Kiss were at the height of their seventies dominance when Love Gun landed in 1977, a lean, hook-packed rock record dressed in one of the most famous covers of the era.

Coming hot on the heels of Destroyer and Rock and Roll Over, the album caught the band riding a wave of sold-out arenas and merchandising mania. Producer Eddie Kramer, who also shaped their landmark Alive! records, kept the sound punchy and direct, built for radio and for the big halls the band was filling night after night.

The title track, written and sung by Paul Stanley, is a swaggering anthem with a riff that still rattles windows. Gene Simmons leers his way through the piano-pounding stomp of "Christine Sixteen", and "Shock Me" marks Ace Frehley's first lead vocal on a Kiss album, complete with a blistering solo. Peter Criss powers the opener "I Stole Your Love", a track that wastes no time getting to the point.

Ken Kelly's painted cover, with the four members in full regalia surrounded by a crowd of adoring women, sealed the album's larger-than-life image and still looks spectacular at full LP size.

For fans of seventies hard rock, it remains one of the most purely enjoyable records Kiss ever made, short on filler and long on attitude.
