Kiss went disco and lived to tell the tale on Dynasty, the 1979 album that hung a mirrorball above the greasepaint and gave them one of their biggest songs.
Produced by Vini Poncia and recorded at Electric Lady and the Record Plant in New York, Dynasty was the band's seventh studio album, arriving when the late-seventies dance floor was impossible to ignore. Peter Criss plays on only one track, so the cracks in the lineup were already showing, yet the record still bristles with the big riffs and bigger personalities fans expected. All four members take a turn at the microphone, making it one of the most varied entries in their catalogue.
I Was Made for Lovin' You is pure four-on-the-floor swagger, Paul Stanley's falsetto riding a pulsing beat straight onto the dance floor. Ace Frehley steps forward with a snarling take on the Rolling Stones' 2,000 Man, Gene Simmons growls his way through Charisma, and Sure Know Something delivers a slick, melancholy hook that rewards repeat plays.
Dynasty is glam rock with its platform boots planted firmly under the disco lights, and it still sounds like a party worth crashing. For collectors filling in the classic makeup era, it's a gloriously shameless and surprisingly catchy chapter.
