Kiss went big on Destroyer, and the 1976 album still sounds like the moment four face-painted rockers became larger than life.

Coming off the breakthrough of the Alive! concert record, the band teamed up with producer Bob Ezrin, who pushed them toward bigger arrangements, sound effects and a studio ambition they had never attempted before. Gone was the raw, bar-band punch of the early records, replaced by something more theatrical and cinematic. The gamble paid off, delivering several of the songs most closely tied to the Kiss legend and setting up the stadium years that followed.

Detroit Rock City opens the record with a car-crash storyline and one of the great twin-guitar lines in hard rock, while God of Thunder lets Gene Simmons stomp through a sludgy, menacing groove. Shout It Out Loud is pure arena-sized fun, and Beth, sung by drummer Peter Criss over strings and piano, became an unlikely ballad hit that revealed a softer side few expected from the band.

This single-LP edition presents the original album the way it was meant to be heard, front to back on vinyl. For anyone building a Kiss shelf, Destroyer is the cornerstone. Turn it up loud and the opening roar still sounds like the house lights going down.
