King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard bottle a ferocious night onstage on Skull X-Ray, a deluxe edition capturing the band's 2025 set at Field of Vision.
The Melbourne band have long treated their concert tapes as communal property, encouraging fans and independent labels to press their own editions, and the results have become a currency among collectors. Skull X-Ray takes its name and spirit from the Soviet-era bootlegs that music lovers once cut onto discarded medical X-rays, a sly nod to the hunger for forbidden sounds.
The set leans into two fan-favourite chapters. From the 2014 album I'm in Your Mind Fuzz comes its opening suite, with "I'm in Your Mind" and "Cellophane" blurring into one hypnotic, fuzz-drenched run the way they do on record, only louder. Then the band swing toward 2017's Polygondwanaland for "Inner Cell" and "Horology", part of the interlocking sequence at the heart of that album.
Heard live, these songs gain extra muscle and loose-limbed improvisation, the band stretching passages and slamming into transitions with a crowd egging them on. For devoted Gizzheads, this is as much a curio as a record, a striking piece for the shelf and a reminder of how ferocious this band sounds in full flight.
