Oddments is King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard emptying their pockets and finding treasure, back on a bright green vinyl pressing.

The Melbourne band released it in 2014, their fourth studio album and the first of two records they put out that year, landing between Float Along - Fill Your Lungs and I'm in Your Mind Fuzz. It gathers songs that had been knocking around earlier sessions without a home, which gives the whole thing a loose, anything-goes charm. There is no grand concept and no thematic thread, just a band with more ideas than albums to hold them.

That freedom suits them. Where later Gizzard records chase microtonal scales and thrash riffs, Oddments keeps things sunny and slightly warped around the edges. "Vegemite" is a cheerfully daft ode to the famous Australian spread, and "Hot Wax" bounces along on a fuzzy garage strut. Elsewhere, the songs swerve between jangly pop, woozy psych and scrappy rave-ups, often inside a couple of minutes.

Twelve songs come and go without overstaying their welcome, and the band sound like they are having a ridiculous amount of fun. For listeners who found the group through the heavier, more conceptual records, this is a charming snapshot of their early garage-pop instincts, and the green vinyl suits its sun-bleached mood nicely.
