Float Along - Fill Your Lungs is where King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard first let psychedelia take the wheel, swapping garage-rock bluster for sitar drones and fuzz in 2013.

It was the band's third studio album, arriving the same year as Eyes Like the Sky, and it marked a clear turn away from the Western-leaning sound of their earliest work. Stu Mackenzie wrote most of the material and co-produced it with Paul Maybury and Jarrad Brown, recording in home studios and sheds around regional Victoria and New South Wales. It was also the first Gizzard album built around a full drum kit, played by Eric Moore, giving the whole thing a looser, rolling momentum.

The opener sets the tone. Head On/Pill stretches to almost sixteen minutes, a hypnotic raga-rock groove that keeps circling back on itself until the room starts to tilt. 30 Past 7 is tighter and woozier, God Is Calling Me Back Home leans into hazy, sun-baked melody, and the closing title track finds the band playing in 5/4 for the first time, drifting and swelling like a heat shimmer.

Many of the ideas that later made King Gizzard such a prolific cult phenomenon are already here in early form. For anyone tracing the band back to its beginnings, this is a vital stop.
