King Crimson's Islands is heard from the inside out on this 200-gram UK import, which presents David Singleton's 2026 Elemental Mixes of the band's fourth studio album from 1971.

Islands was the last King Crimson record with lyricist Peter Sinfield, made by a lineup built around Robert Fripp, saxophonist and flautist Mel Collins, bassist and singer Boz Burrell and drummer Ian Wallace. It has long been the gentlest and most mysterious entry in the early catalogue, a record full of open space and chamber textures, broken up by sudden jazz squalls.

Rather than polishing a new definitive version, Singleton works from the full run of studio sessions and presents the pieces unadorned, closer to how they might have sounded in the room. Each mix brings in at least one element from the tapes that the original left out, so familiar passages arrive with fresh detail.

"Formentera Lady" unfolds slowly from its pastoral opening, "Sailor's Tale" lets Fripp's jagged guitar and Collins' saxophone collide with real bite, and "Ladies of the Road" keeps its bawdy, bluesy swagger. The title track, lit by Keith Tippett's piano, settles into a hush that feels almost private.

This is a companion to the 1971 album rather than a replacement, and a fascinating one for listeners who already know every note of the original.
