King Crimson's seven-piece 2014 line-up rolled into New York for four nights, and 2014 NYC distils that run into a gatefold 2LP set pressed on 200-gram vinyl.

Robert Fripp had reconvened the band that year with a radical formation: three drummers lined up across the front of the stage in Gavin Harrison, Pat Mastelotto and Bill Rieflin, joined by Tony Levin on bass and Chapman Stick, Mel Collins on saxophone and flute, and Jakko Jakszyk on guitar and vocals. Recorded at the Best Buy Theatre, the set reached back to the early 1970s while introducing new pieces written for the line-up.

Larks' Tongues in Aspic (Part I) and Pictures of a City show how ferociously this band could attack the early catalogue, and The Sailor's Tale gives Fripp and Collins room to stretch out. The set closes with 21st Century Schizoid Man, a monster in any era but especially thunderous with three kits behind it.

The three-drummer arrangement is the real revelation, turning the rhythm section into an orchestra of interlocking patterns and colour that rewards close listening on a good system.

Launching a new archival series from the band, this is a superb document of a line-up many fans regard as one of King Crimson's finest.
