Cosmocrator is Khnvm's fourth album, blue and black marble vinyl wrapped around death metal that reads Christopher Hitchens and Carl Jung as source material rather than window dressing.

Fronted by Bangladeshi-born guitarist and vocalist Obliterator and based in Germany, Khnvm arrived with 2019's Foretold Monuments of Flesh to real acclaim, then built a genuine live reputation off the back of Portals to Oblivion two years later. This record pushes their whole project further into deliberately difficult territory, splitting the difference between old-school death metal brutality and something more contemporary in its structure, while the lyrics draw directly on Hitchens' God Is Not Great and Jung's Mysterium Coniunctionis to chase the tension between rationality and mysticism rather than settling for either. The title itself carries a double meaning, ruler of the world and, in religious vocabulary, a name for Satan.

Purgatorial Pyre opens the record at over six minutes, establishing the album's patience before the aggression fully kicks in. Fetid Eden runs even longer, the clearest showcase of the band's ambition, and Venom Spawn is the record's most punishing stretch, riffs stacked with genuine menace. The title track compresses the whole concept into four dense minutes.

Death metal built to be studied as much as headbanged to. Khnvm clearly want both.
