Kero Kero Bonito swapped sugar for static on TOTEP, a four-song EP from 2018 pressed here on 10-inch vinyl.
The London trio of Sarah Midori Perry, Gus Lobban and Jamie Bulled had made their name with bright, bilingual electropop, culminating in the candy-coloured Bonito Generation. TOTEP was a deliberate swerve. Written and produced by Lobban, it trades chirpy synths for distorted guitars, crunchy drums and bursts of digital noise, and it pointed straight toward the moodier Time 'n' Place later that year.
"The One True Path" opens with fuzz and a wry sense of purpose, before "Only Acting" lurches between sweet indie pop and a chaotic, glitched-out breakdown that feels like the record malfunctioning in real time. "You Know How It Is" and "Cinema" keep things short and punchy, both clocking in at around two minutes.
Perry's voice remains the anchor, cool and slightly deadpan, floating over the noise with the same playful charm that won fans in the first place.
At barely eleven minutes, it's a quick listen but a significant one, the moment a cult internet pop act proved it could plug in, turn up and still sound completely like itself. On a 10-inch, it makes a neat little collector's piece too.
