Kenny Rogers brings his warm, husky voice to the holidays on Christmas from the Heart, his 1998 seasonal album, pressed here on limited white vinyl.
By the late 90s, Rogers had decades of country and pop hits behind him and nothing left to prove. He had already made several holiday records, starting with Christmas in 1981, but this one, issued on the Dreamcatcher label, feels especially personal. Producers Brent Maher and Warren Hartman keep the focus squarely on that voice and on the themes closest to him at the time, family and faith.
The record mixes familiar carols and much-loved seasonal standards with a run of new songs Rogers co-wrote for the occasion with Hartman. Those originals lean towards the gentler side of the season, with gratitude, generosity and plenty for the youngest listeners, the quieter moments that so many holiday records skip past.
Rogers always sang like he was talking straight to you, and that easy, conversational warmth is exactly what a Christmas record needs. It is the kind of album that ends up on the turntable while the tree goes up and the kitchen fills with people, and the white vinyl suits the season perfectly, like a fresh fall of snow on the turntable.
