Whistle Stop finds Kenny Dorham writing every tune and leading one of hard bop's most enviable bands, presented here on 180-gram vinyl as part of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series.
Dorham spent much of his career as the trumpeter other musicians admired more than the public did, a graceful player with a composer's ear who had worked alongside Charlie Parker and helped launch the original Jazz Messengers. Recorded in 1961, this session puts his writing front and center, and the material earns it.
Hank Mobley's warm, rounded tenor sits beside him up front, with Kenny Drew on piano and the Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones rhythm section underneath. "Philly Twist" opens the record with real bounce, the title track and "Buffalo" show off his knack for melodies that feel familiar on first hearing, and the brief "Dorham's Epitaph" closes things on a bittersweet note.
Nothing here is flashy for the sake of it. The solos are lyrical and conversational, the ensemble passages tight without sounding drilled, and Dorham's tone has that soft, burnished edge that makes even his quickest runs feel relaxed.
For hard bop collectors it's a beautifully balanced record, and a reminder that some of Blue Note's finest dates came from players who never chased the limelight.
