Fifty years on, The Köln Concert gets the anniversary treatment it deserves: a 2LP set in a gatefold jacket with a booklet and art print, honoring the most famous solo piano performance in jazz.
In 1975 Keith Jarrett arrived at the Cologne Opera House exhausted, in pain, and facing a piano that was far from the concert grand he had requested. The small instrument had a thin treble and sticky keys, and he very nearly refused to play. Instead, he improvised for more than an hour, working around its limits by staying in the middle of the keyboard and building rolling, hypnotic patterns in the left hand.
The result, released by ECM later that year with Manfred Eicher producing, became one of the best-selling solo piano records ever made. Part I opens with a simple, bell-like phrase and blossoms into a gospel-tinged groove that feels both spontaneous and inevitable. Part II A churns through insistent vamps and sudden bursts of lyricism, and the closing Part II C is a tender, songlike encore that many listeners can hum from memory.
There is no written composition here, only a musician listening hard to the moment and to an imperfect instrument.
This edition invites a fresh listen to a record that changed how the world heard improvisation.
