Piano, drums and a voice that could fill a cathedral: Keane's Hopes and Fears returns on 180 gram vinyl, as stirring now as it was in 2004.

The Sussex band's debut was years in the making, recorded between 2001 and early 2004 at producer James Sanger's house in Normandy and at Helioscentric in Rye, with Andy Green and the band also sharing production duties. Built around Tim Rice-Oxley's keyboards rather than guitars, it went straight to number one in the UK and stayed in the national conversation for years, picking up the Brit Award for Best Album. It remains one of the best-selling British albums of its decade.

"Somewhere Only We Know" is the obvious entry point, a wistful, rolling piano anthem that became a modern standard, and "Everybody's Changing" captures the bittersweet feeling of being left behind while everyone else moves on. "This Is the Last Time" turns heartbreak into something huge and luminous, while the closing "Bedshaped" builds slowly into one of Tom Chaplin's most soaring performances.

Emotional without ever turning cheap, the album still sounds like a first love remembered in widescreen. This heavyweight reissue suits its rich, spacious production, and it is a lovely way to revisit an era when a guitar-free band could own the charts with nothing but melody and nerve.
