Midnight at the Movies is Justin Townes Earle's 2009 second album, a lean, old-soul collection of country, folk and rambling blues, pressed here as a limited-edition LP.
Released on Bloodshot, the record built on the promise of his debut and showed the son of Steve Earle carving out his own path, mining tradition without sounding like a museum piece. Produced by R.S. Field and Steve Poulton, it features a sharp band including Cory Younts on banjo, mandolin and harmonica, Pete Finney on steel and dobro, and Josh Hedley on fiddle.
The title track opens with a wistful, late-night shuffle, and They Killed John Henry reworks an old folk legend into something urgent and personal. Mama's Eyes is the emotional centre, an unflinching look at family and his own restless streak, while his slowed, aching take on The Replacements' Can't Hardly Wait turns a rock anthem into a front-porch confession.
Halfway to Jackson adds a spring in the step before the record winds down with Here We Go Again, and the band never plays a note more than it needs to.
Earle left us far too soon, and records like this show just how gifted a writer he was. Put it on late, turn the lights down and let it do its quiet work.
