Jungle's fifth album Sunshine is a warm, unhurried record that trades some of the old dancefloor urgency for slow-rolling grooves and a late-summer haze.

The London project led by Josh Lloyd-Watson and Tom McFarland has spent more than a decade refining its blend of retro soul, disco and modern production, and Sunshine leans into the softer end of that range. Lydia Kitto's voice is woven through much of the record, giving these songs a sweeter, more intimate center than before.

Opener "Come Back to Me" sets the tone with a rocksteady lilt, a dubby bassline and stacked backing harmonies straight out of a 1960s soul revue. "Where Are You Now?" rides a sticky melody and layered vocals, while "Romeo II" brings back Bas, who rapped on "Romeo" from Loving in Stereo, for a rhythmic sequel.

Later, "The Wave" carries a gently uplifting message on punchy bass and warm synths, and closer "Heavy on My Soul" circles back to the dreamy mood of the opener with breathy, after-dark vocals. The basslines do a lot of the talking throughout, nimble and melodic without ever crowding the songs.

It's a record about gratitude and longing rather than pure party fuel, and it rewards a full side-by-side listen, ideally with the windows open and the light starting to fade.
