Julien Baker's Sprained Ankle is back on vinyl, the hushed 2015 debut that introduced one of indie rock's most openly vulnerable songwriters.
Baker wrote most of these songs while studying at Middle Tennessee State University, then recorded them in 2014 at Spacebomb Studios in Richmond, Virginia. The results first surfaced quietly online before 6131 Records gave the album a proper release, and word of mouth did the rest. By the end of 2015 it was turning up on critics' year-end lists, an unlikely outcome for a record this small and this raw.
Opener "Blacktop" sets the template: a voice, a guitar and a lot of space, with Baker's delivery rising until it feels ready to crack. The title track packs doubt and dark humour into barely two and a half minutes, "Something" turns a fading connection into a slow-motion ache, and "Rejoice" wrestles with faith so directly that it feels like an argument with the sky.
Plenty of artists have written about depression, addiction and belief since, but few have done it with this much plain-spoken honesty. Years on, Sprained Ankle still sounds like a late-night confession you were never supposed to overhear, and it rewards a quiet room and your full attention.
